Plug & Play Game — The Surreal Indie Animation You Can Finish in 15 Minutes

Some games take a hundred hours. Plug & Play takes about twelve minutes, and you’ll still be thinking about it a week later.

Released on 5 March 2015, the Plug & Play game is the odd, funny, slightly unsettling brainchild of Swiss animator Michael Frei, who drew every frame, and programmer Mario von Rickenbach, who built it into something you can poke at. It’s published by Etter Studio, and it’s less a “game” in the shoot-things-and-level-up sense than an interactive animation you steer with your finger or your mouse. Broken Reality 2000

The premise, if you can call it that: a world of stick-limbed creatures with plugs for heads. They connect. They disconnect. They pull, push, switch and occasionally do things that make you tilt your head sideways. There’s no tutorial, no HUD, no score — just a black-and-white world that reacts when you touch it.

What actually happens when you play

You tap, drag and hold. That’s the whole control scheme. What changes is what your input means from one scene to the next: in one moment you’re plugging two characters together, in the next you’re pulling a rope, flipping a switch, or nudging a crowd of identical figures into doing something they probably shouldn’t.

The rhythm is closer to a short film you’re allowed to interrupt than a puzzle game. Nothing punishes you. Nothing fails you. The game simply keeps escalating — starting as playful slapstick and drifting somewhere considerably stranger by the final act, with a stretch that Steam users have tagged as psychological horror for good reason.

It’s based on Frei’s award-winning 2013 animated short of the same name, and that origin shows in the craft: the linework is deliberate, the sound design is dry and percussive, and the timing is comedic in a way most games never manage.

Why it still gets recommended a decade later

Because it’s memorable per minute in a way very few titles are. The Verge called it “a surprisingly emotional game” beneath the weirdness. It was an Official Selection at IndieCade 2015, a Nuovo Award nominee at the Independent Games Festival 2015, took Best Arts Award and the Audience Award at Sense of Wonder Night 2015, was named “The Black Horse of Video Games” at Ars Independent 2015, and earned a Jury Selection at the Japan Media Arts Festival 2016.

Player reception has held up too: roughly 85% of over 2,000 English-language Steam reviews are positive, out of more than 4,000 reviews across all languages.

Worth knowing before you buy: it’s short by design, and it carries nudity and sexual content tags on Steam — abstract and cartoonish rather than explicit, but it’s not a kids’ game. Age ratings sit at 6+ (USK Germany, DEJUS Brazil) and 13+ (IGRS Indonesia).
